Aston Villa will step up their efforts to make Paul Lambert
their new manager in the next 24 hours after reports suggested that the
Norwich manager had resigned after being refused permission to speak to
the West Midlands club.
Lambert has guided the Canaries to two successive promotions and established them in the Premier League last season. It is understood that Norwich are desperate to keep Lambert, who is operating on a rolling contract at Carrow Road, but the lure of Villa appears to be too strong.
Villa were seeking permission to speak to Lambert on Thursday and, despite his apparent departure – there was no official confirmation from either club on Wednesday night – compensation may still have to be agreed.
Gus Poyet, Ian Holloway, Steve Bruce and Alan Curbishley are among the early favourites being linked with both the Norwich and Swansea jobs.
Villa avoided relegation from the Premier League by only two points and had significantly to reduce their wage bill after debts of more than £50m for the year ending May 2011. Villa owner Randy Lerner is hoping it will be a case of third time lucky in terms of replacing McLeish.
He held talks with the former Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he opted to stay at Molde in Norway for family reasons - although he was not formally offered the Villa post.
Villa also spoke with advisors of Wigan manager Roberto MartÃnez, who had initially rejected the chance to replace Gerard Houllier 12 months ago. But the Latics chairman Dave Whelan has claimed Martinez, who held talks with Liverpool, is staying put.
